 What Ever Happened to Boxee?

I asked myself this question a few weeks ago; when I was cleaning up my old laptop.  I had downloaded the beta for Boxee on my Windows XP laptop back when my friends Dion, Joe, and Steph were all using it.  Joe and Steph had it for their Macbook and Dion and I had it for Windows XP.  I use to use it a lot when I was at school. I didn’t have a TV in my dorm, so I used it when I was bored most nights.  I enjoyed it because at the time Boxee and Hulu were sharing content. So I could watch shows and movies from Hulu using Boxee. Well once Hulu left Boxee, I started to use it less.  Now it looks like they are back.

Boxee is coming out with Boxee TV.  It is a way for you to watch internet content on your home TV; sort of like Apple TV. They are taking pre-orders on their homepage Boxee.tv.  They also have an updated version of their Beta that now works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7,  Mac OS X, and Linux.

My thoughts – I don’t know how well Boxee TV will compare to Apple TV.  I don’t have any interest in getting it either. I am happy with my desktop PC and my 22″ monitor/LCD TV. However, I would recommend Boxee for your computer. Its a good way of finding music, shows, movies, and web videos easily. Its not going to be anything like Hulu or other sites like that, but you might be surprised at all that you can find.

I was a Fan of Boxee back in the day. I also though that it was going to change the way we watch TV on our computer. I mean it all sounded good; and agree with Mick that with Hulu was with Boxee it was Great.
I doubt I would buy Boxee TV or Apple TV, but I do enjoy the ability to watch my favorite TV shows on-line. To bad Boxee wasn’t as good as we all first thought.

I have tried Boxee; and I like it. It is a good way to kill a weekend when you are stuck at home or just looking for something to watch.
I like most of the things I find on it and well its def better then having a TV at times.

    Nice article Mick :)

I think watching “TV” on the internet can definitely be a better alternative than using an actual TV at times. However, do you think its a replacement? I truly wonder if we will ever see a solid enough “online” replacement for television. It seems as if that market is already under control.

I agree Steve. I think we all thought Boxee was going to change our experience with watching television. That’s what all the hype was about. Now, it seems to be becoming a distant story that never fully took off. Watching your favorite TV shows online is always useful, but would you watch regular television on your computer over your actual television?

True, but with all these “On-Demand” features for your cable box; You can watch your favorite shows…anytime!
You also have to look at all of these shows. How can I watch Big Bang on CBS and Community on NBC; when there both on at 8pm? With my computer using Hulu or On-Demand I can.

Good point, Mick. Its definitely an added bonus when trying to watch multiple shows being played at the same time.
