As we all get ready for the holiday rush, some of us will be looking to upgrade our cell phone. With new models and devices, comes a new chapter in service. These new data networks will enable our phones and other wireless devices to stream video and run real-time applications.
This technology which many tech enthusiast already know about is called 4G. It actually is a standard being worked on by the International Telecommunications Union — Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R), but services labeled “4G” may or may not mean “4G.” 4G means, in common usage, fourth generation, the successor to 3G and 2G cell-phone data networks. 4G download and upload speeds approach that of a cable modem and are considerably faster than 3G. Sprint says its, “4G speeds are 10 times faster than 3G and that moving from 3G to 4G is equivalent to replacing a DSL modem with a broadband cable modem”. Since 4G speeds allow applications to work in real time, there will be lots of new services available. A user will be able to see data as it is coming in – also known as real time data; instead of being delayed while the information is collected. It has been acknowledged that these 4G devices will work on the current 3G networks, but we will not see the full capability of this technology until 4G is rolled out completely.
So my views on the topic…
In general, with all new things it will take time to see a complete picture unfold for this new technology. If you go out and buy a new 4G phone, you may need to wait until 4G comes to you area to get the full experience. Ultimately, I am happy with my current “simple” cell phone, but for you more of the tech crazed fans – have fun and let us know how things work out.
