I recently conducted an interview with Martin Piraino. He’s a blogger and IT expert. I wanted to see what he felt what impact social networks and technology has on all of us. Below are the questions and answers that he shared with me. I have to thank Martin for taking the time to do this!
Where would you feel we would be without technology?
Seriously can I answer that and say “in the dark ages?” Technology is what drives business, without it and the advances of the last 50+ years we’d still be using an abacus, and our fingers and toes to do simple calculations (ok so maybe that’s an over exaggeration but you get the point). The invention of the transistor and semiconductor technology really have changed the world. We wouldn’t have cell phones, ipods, desktop/laptop computers, even car and truck engines now have computer electronics built into them, so the transportation industry would be back in the dark ages too.
Are social networks an technology related? Does one benefit from the other or would society be lost without either of them?
They are related. You could have technology without social networks, however, I feel it’s a natural progression of technology and society to merge to a degree, which is what the social networking is doing. It’s people who share common interests or goals, collaborating and expressing themselves in a way that wouldn’t be possible without the technological advances we’ve had.
How has all of this affected you today, whether it be positive or negative?
Without the social networking (and face to face networking) that i’ve been a part of, and as I’ve been quoted before, it has afforded me some opportunities that I likely wouldn’t have had otherwise. The news interview back in February on ABC15, and the blogging workshop with my being quoted in the Arizona Republic in a story afterwards are two things that would have not happened had it not been for technology and social networking.
For someone not too familiar with social networking or afraid to adapt to technology. What advice would you have for them?
I’ve been asked this question in previous interviews, and my advice is to embrace it, educate yourself on it, it is here to stay. It is what will help drive business. It is becoming somewhat mainstream already and part of what employers will be looking for in the future. You need t0 have some knowledge and skills in social media and technology.
