So Google has made its choice of which city is going to get the Free Wifi Internet that over 1,100 cities tried to get. The winner was Kansas City. Google said, “our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations”.
Google felt that they could help bring a better way of life and learning to the city of Kansas City. Kansas City, Kansas has a population of about 145,786. The internet will be free for both schools and city facilities. Google is working on pricing for other subscribers. The services should be ready to use by 2012, and this might only be the beginning. Milo Medin, Vice President of Access Services has posted on the Google Blog with the following statement…
“Today is the start, not the end the project. And over the coming months, we’ll be talking to other interested cities about the possibility of us bringing ultra high-speed broadband to their communities”. It looks like his words could be true as Kansas City was not the true first city for internet service from Google.
In August of last year Google gave back to its hometown of Mountain View, CA with a free WiFi network, “GoogleWiFi”. The signal brings wireless access to residents, businesses, and visitors. All you need is a laptop or other wireless-enabled device and a web browser. Once connected, open a web browser and sign in with a free Google Account. This was their way of giving back to the city that they call home. Google also has announced plans to build a smaller ultra-high-speed network in a community of about 850 faculty and staff homes near the Stanford University campus. I would like to see how all of these cities like their service and too see if maybe…Pittsburgh, PA could be next.
In the meantime, you can help contribute to Google’s main goal; which is to help provide better internet service to the US. So what can we do you ask? One thing is to go to Fiber For Communites. Here you can find ways to contact you local government and stress how important it is for our services to move forward like the rest of the world. This is just the start and all this has shown that technology is continuing to move forward and helping people reach new highs.
