Even though this is going a month back…for Christmas I received the new Apple Magic Mouse. There were a few factors that led me to wanting one, but when I received it, I didn’t use it right away. The main reason I wanted the product was because my wired Mighty Mouse had some technical problems. To quickly summarize the problem, the mouse would randomly cause the windows of the screen to pan in and out quickly. The only way to stop it would to be to unplug the mouse and then plug it back in. If you have a Mac and aren’t sure what I am describing, press the F3 key. Pressing that key is one way to make the windows pan in and out, but there was also the ability to perform the same command by pressing any of the side buttons on the mouse. I digress. This was a very annoying problem and would just do it randomly and I knew it was time for a new mouse. Here are my top 5 reasons why I believe the upgrade to the Magic Mouse is absolutely necessary.
1. You can only purchase the product as a wireless device. I know some people like the wired version of a mouse because it’s cheaper, but this mouse is thinner and plays big! Not having to deal with another wire around my desk makes for less clutter and easier navigation.
2. NO MORE SCROLL WHEEL! I think this has got to be the best upgrade and feature of the entire mouse. Everyone that has used a Mighty Mouse I am sure is familiar with the pain in the neck the scroll wheel can be. Half the time it doesn’t work, it will only scroll one way and not the other, plus it’s so easy for debris to get caught within the wheel. Now, it’s a touch pad! At first I thought it would be difficult to use. Not at all! Let me tell you, it saves for a lot of aggravation, it’s the easiest mouse to handle, and the best mouse ever created.
3. The mouse has a variety of “finger swipe” patterns that allow you pan around web pages in a unique way. Usually, users would be relying on the scroll wheel to navigate, but now “finger swipe” is the new way to navigate. It was something I found particularly interesting and yet another aspect that drew me in towards the product.
4. Something that I find really neat is that this mouse reaches 33 feet away with it’s bluetooth connection. (See here for more information). I like the fact that I can have my computer at my desk and bring my mouse to another location if I don’t feel like sitting in front of the computer. (Once I get the new wireless keyboard, this will work perfectly.)
5. Finally it’s a nicer and smoother design than the Mighty Mouse. I like the fact that it’s thinner and has a sharper look to it. Now that might not be a reason for some people to buy it, but for me and many others, it definitely is. It is a heavier mouse, but I think more effort and thought went into creating this mouse that the hardware and parts that went into making it contributed to the weight change.
I’d like to know what you think of both of these mice. Do you own or have used both of them? What do you think of them when comparing them side by side? Whether you agree or disagree with my five points for upgrading, that’s your call. However, why would you upgrade…or not?

I had a mighty mouse that has since disappeared. It could very well have been missing for 6 months and I wouldn’t know because I hardly used it. It ate batteries. It constantly needed to be cleaned. and that ball was a nightmare.
I just bought a new 27″ iMac and it came with the magic mouse. There are things about this mouse I love. The surface gesturing is amazing, the power down feature saves batteries. All the reasons you mentioned make it worth upgrading.
I have 2 small beefs with it but I’ll still use it and thing it’s a great product.
Here are my problems:
1) No side buttons for expose. Love that about the mighty mouse
2) The mighty mouse was more ergonomic with the rounded top. If you’re using the magic mouse for 10 hours a day (like I am) the ring finger on your right hand almost rubs raw from the edge and the clicking action rubbing the entire time.
Apple is so close to the perfect mouse!
