After reading an article on CNET it made me want to write one as well as a response to what I think about Apple’s stance on their products. Here’s the article by David Carnoy stating his brother-in-law Ken’s opinion, ‘Why Apple Must Do A Netbook’
I love Apple products and in my opinion they make the best Operating System and the nicest looking products as well. The biggest problem for most consumers is they are too pricey for the average person. For an average person, you would have to save up some money for a while to afford a Mac, but for a PC you will have no problem going out and buying one.
This leads me into my discussion of why I agree with David Carnoy’s article. The Macbook air is priced at a ridiculous $1,800. In Apple’s eyes, that’s what they feel their product is worth. Although, I think this is probably the one product Apple came out with that failed. It doesn’t appear to sell well and With no optical drive, that’s definitely a killer to a computer. All that’s really created here is a larger version of a Netbook. Does this make any sense to you?
In the products defense, yes, it is lighter and easier to carry for those that want something that’s portable. Why though, would I would buy this and on top of that spend extra money on an optical drive? I can easily go out and buy a computer that already has one installed. Not only are optical drives expensive, but the Macbook Air is a fortune on top of that. Logically speaking, it doesn’t seem like this was a smart idea for Apple.
Which brings us to Ken’s point, Apple needs to make a netbook.
The Macbook Air was a larger version of this idea which I stated earlier. At least, that’s what it looks like to me. So how about, make something smaller, like some of the companies that use Windows. I don’t own any Apple computer yet, but as a technology enthusiast, I really want to! An Apple Netbook would be affordable and also would draw a lot of customer attention, especially if they can make one for the price that Ken suggested at $599. I know I would pay for that! It may cost a little more than the Windows Netbook, but you are paying for the Apple experience and the highly desired operating system.
Just a little 411 for you all – Windows doesn’t like the idea of people putting the Mac OSX operating system on their netbooks because it breaks the end user license agreement (EULA). I know for a fact, Apple is completely against this as well, but some of the netbooks being released on the market are “hackintosh” compatible.
So Apple, what do you have to say for yourself? Are you going to let Apple run away with the Netbook idea and not make one of your own? It’s your turn to act on the demand of the market!
Do you believe an Apple Netbook would be a smart business decision? Would people really buy this product and rid the horror that was the MacBook Air? I have to thank David for his article. Without it, I would have never made my response post to it!
